Case Study

Project Höltinghauser Industrial Works

At a quarry lake near the Höltinghauser Industriewerke GmbH (an industrial facility in Höltinghausen, Germany), Gleistein, 1PUNKT5, and Dyneema® collaborated to commission Lower Saxony’s first floating photovoltaic system. Equipped with 3,400 solar modules that generate over two megawatts of power, this installation marks a notable advance in regional renewable energy.

Mooring System Development and Testing

Gleistein devised the whole mooring system – from anchor to platform – and thoroughly tested it in its in-house laboratory. Central to this solution are X-Permanent Flex mooring lines, which utilise recycled-based Dyneema® fibre for the strongest and most durable load-bearing core possible, designed for decades-long service life. Each line features a protective cover that shields the load-bearing core from external wear, while an integrated sand filter mitigates internal abrasion. Engineered to withstand continuous tension and dynamic water conditions, the ropes are designed for minimal maintenance and a long service life underwater.

To install a large quantity of solar modules on water, the project demanded mooring lines that could meet stringent performance standards while minimising environmental impact. The combination of recycled-based Dyneema® fibre and Gleistein’s robust rope design thus offered the perfect sustainable solution. X-Permanent Flex mooring lines provide excellent fatigue and creep resistance, as well as an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio – key factors in enabling efficient installation and smooth long-term operation.

A Milestone for Floating Solar

By combining Gleistein’s mooring expertise with 1PUNKT5’s system integration and Dyneema®’s fibre technology, the project provides a stable framework for floating solar power generation, which SCHULZ Systemtechnik successfully carried out as the general contractor. The mooring system’s robust design ensures the modules’ uninterrupted operation, making this installation a compelling example of how innovative materials and proven engineering can support sustainable energy solutions.

“All three companies share a purpose-led, performance-driven mindset, pushing forward cleaner energy. Dyneema®’s recycled-based fiber delivers longer-lasting, high-quality mooring ropes – essential for making projects like this a reality.”

Technical & Business Development Manager bei Dyneema®

“For our floating solar project in Visbek, generating over two megawatts for chalk sand production, we partnered with Gleistein and Avient to deploy sustainable mooring lines. Made from recycled mixed plastics, these ropes securely hold 3,400 modules while reducing the project’s carbon footprint. By replacing conventional materials, we cut emissions from both power generation and components.”
